Counts include 5% for cuts, which covers a running or stack bond. Waste by pattern and per-pallet counts if you are laying herringbone or a curve.

What goes under them

The base column is 4 in of compacted crushed stone, which suits a patio in good soil. Soft or clay ground wants 6, and a driveway wants 8 to 12 — base depth by use.

How many 12x12 pavers for a 10x10 area?: 105 — a 12x12 in paver covers one square foot, so the count is the area plus waste. This is the easiest size to plan with.
How many for a 16x16 or 20x20 patio?: 1210 and 1890 of a 4 x 8 in. Both are big enough that delivery and pallet counts matter more than the unit price.
How much edge restraint?: The perimeter — 48 ft for a 12x12. Without it the outer course creeps outward, the joints open and the whole field loses its interlock.
Does the pattern change the count?: Only through waste. Running bond wastes about 5%, herringbone about 10% because every edge paver is cut on the diagonal.
Should I order a spare pallet?: Order the waste with the job, from the same batch. Concrete pavers vary in colour between production runs enough to see across a patio, so a repair made later from a fresh pallet reads as a patch.
